Grand opening of the monument to a great american poet Walt Whitman was
held at the territory of Lomonosov Moscow State University on October
14,2009.
U.S.Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei
Lavrov, Mayor of our capital Yurii
Luzhkov, Mocwow State University Chancellor Victor Sadovnichii and other
officials took part in the opening ceremony.
Means required to create the above architectural ensemble was raised by
two public organisations -
Russian Peace Fund and American-Russian Fund for cultural cooperation. Heads
of both Funds - Deputy
of Russian State Duma, First deputy Chairman of State Duma Committee on
International affairs Leonid Slutsky and former US Congressman James
Symington as well as First deputy Chairman of the Board of
Russian Peace Fund Elena Sutormina and academician Igor Panfilov were also
attended the ceremony.
The monument to american poet was presented as a gift to Moscow city by
Washington mayor's office in response to Moscow authorities decision to
present the monument to Alexander Pushkin to Washington city. The monument
to Alexander Pushkin was instolled in the capital of the United States at
the territory of J.Washington University in 2000 year. The author of both
artworks is honoured artist of Russian Federation,sculptor Alexander
Bourganov.
Moscow mayor Yurii Luzhkov called the above action as "an event" in
developing relations between Russian Federation and United States of
America.
Speaking at the opening ceremony and the following meeting with students
of Moscow University U.S.Secretary of State Hillary Clinton noted that "as
Pushkin and Whitman "reset" their poetry in the distant past
so nowdays USA and Russia are "restarting" relations between our countries
and that is more important
between our nations".
